DOT Physicals & CDL Medical Exams in Oregon
Driving large commercial vehicles for a living requires a CDL (commercial driver’s license) and a valid DOT medical card. This card can only be obtained once you successfully pass a DOT physical. You will need a physical exam every 1-2 years to keep your CDL active.
What Is A DOT Physical Exam?
A DOT physical examination is a physical exam mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. A commercial driver is considered a “safety-sensitive” employee and must complete a DOT exam to maintain a valid CDL. This examination will determine whether you are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a CMV.
During your DOT physical, a certified medical examiner (CME) will use a variety of criteria to determine your eligibility to operate a CMV. The CME will also check your vital signs, review your medical history, and perform a hands-on physical examination that includes but is not limited to a screening of your:
- Vision
- Hearing
- Mouth and throat health
- Heart and cardiovascular health
- Extremities
- Lung and chest function
- Hernias
- Nervous system health
- Back and spine health
