Do I Need Microneedling?

Are you unsatisfied with the appearance, texture, or tone of your skin? Do you find yourself wishing for a way to reveal smoother, healthier skin? You may be interested in learning more about microneedling, a revolutionary skincare treatment designed to stimulate new collagen production and rejuvenate your skin from the inside out. We’re proud to offer this treatment, along with our other top-quality services, at OnePeak Medical.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling has become one of the most popular treatments in the beauty world thanks to its dramatic results and various benefits. This treatment uses a small, handheld device with multiple tiny needles to create micro-wounds in the top layers of the skin. The needles puncture the skin, creating a small amount of trauma and triggering the body’s natural healing responses.

This process increases collagen, which acts as the framework of the skin and can help correct and minimize the number of common skin concerns. The treatment process is quick, straightforward, and virtually painless. There is zero downtime required after treatment, giving you the flexibility to return to your normal activities immediately. As the skin is restored, you should notice your concerns begin to improve.

This treatment can be easily combined with other skin-rejuvenating options to enhance your final results and deliver nourishing and healing compounds via the tiny channels created by the needles. Results are long-lasting, and, with repeated treatments, you could see your skin’s overall health and appearance completely transform.

What Are the Benefits?

This treatment strikes a balance between external and internal skin rejuvenation by offering both. Unlike external treatments like masks, this treatment process stimulates deeper, longer-lasting healing properties within the skin to prolong your final results and correct common skin concerns over time.

However, it also uses internal healing to refresh the outer layers of the skin, creating a smoother, healthier appearance. Treatment typically takes just 30-45 minutes, requires zero downtime, and can be pursued regularly to keep your skin looking its best.

Which Areas Can It Treat?

This treatment is suitable for treating the face, neck, and chest. These areas often show signs of aging more quickly than other areas of the body. In addition, common skin concerns like sun damage and acne are more noticeable in these areas.

What Concerns Can It Address?

Thanks to the powerful healing response it triggers, this treatment is able to address a number of common concerns. Here are some of the most commonly treated concerns in our office.

Lines, Wrinkles, and Skin Laxity

These common signs of aging can develop over time and become more noticeable as you grow older. This treatment is able to smooth away lines and wrinkles and tighten loose skin thanks to renewed collagen production, which helps restore the skin’s structure and create a more youthful appearance. Those with mild to moderate signs of aging are encouraged to learn more about what this treatment can do for their skin and specific concerns.

Acne

Acne can be one of the most difficult skin concerns to treat. While it appears on the surface of the skin, its root cause is often bacteria beneath the surface. Breakouts can be exacerbated by diet, skincare routine, and makeup and skincare products. This treatment can help manage some types of acne by stimulating the body’s healing response and promoting new collagen production, which can lead to healthier, clearer skin.

Hyperpigmentation and Uneven Skin Tone

Hyperpigmentation and discoloration can cause a noticeably uneven skin tone, which can be difficult to conceal. This issue can worsen with age or harmful sun exposure. When addressed with this treatment, your uneven skin tone can be corrected over time as the body heals the outer layers of skin and produces new, fresh skin cells.

Uneven Texture

Dry or dull skin can lead to a bumpy, uneven texture and a lackluster appearance. This treatment can help give your skin a new glow by refreshing the outer layers and improving your skin’s health thanks to the healing process it stimulates.

Scarring

Some patients experience scarring caused by injury, acne, or other concerns. These scars can be challenging to hide and, while they tend to fade, they can remain noticeable for a significant length of time. This treatment process helps rejuvenate the outer layer of skin and can successfully fade scars more quickly.

Sun Damage

Harmful sun exposure can cause over 90% of all common skin concerns, according to some estimates. Damage caused by the sun can include fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. Microneedling can help restore the skin’s clear, smooth appearance and heal sun damage for some patients.

Can It Be Combined With Other Treatments?

This treatment can be combined with other skin-rejuvenating treatments. It can also be combined with different serums and hydrating factors to deliver nourishment and healing to the lower layers of the skin. Your doctor can explain your different options during an initial consultation and help you choose the treatment combination that is best for your skin. Here are two of our recommended treatment combinations to enhance and prolong your results:

PRP Therapy

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is harvested from your blood and can deliver powerful, targeted healing to treated areas when combined with this treatment. One of the unique benefits of this treatment is that it opens small, deep channels into the lower layers of the skin, allowing the PRP formula to permeate the skin and stimulate healing and new cell growth. This can enhance the results of your treatment and provide more extensive rejuvenation.

Radiofrequency

This treatment can also be combined with radiofrequency treatment, which uses waves of energy to heat the skin and cause more collagen and elastin production. This increase in structural protein production can help prolong the results of your treatment and provide your skin with a more noticeable lift.

Am I Eligible for Treatment?

If you are an adult man or woman who is concerned about the appearance and health of your skin, you could be a candidate for this treatment. A good candidate has skin that is generally healthy and free from any active irritation or infection which could interact negatively with treatment.

You may not be an ideal candidate if you have active or cystic acne, which could be irritated or aggravated by the small needles used during treatment. In addition, those with bleeding disorders may not be ideal candidates for this treatment.

Finally, those with severe signs of aging may not be ideal candidates for treatment as it is not able to correct advanced wrinkles and skin laxity. If you have questions about your candidacy, one of our doctors can help you evaluate your concerns during your initial consultation.

What Should I Expect?

If you’re considering this treatment, you may be wondering what you can expect. Each patient has a different experience, but here is a general idea of what you can look forward to at our professional office.

Consultation

To begin, one of our doctors will meet with you for an initial consultation. This appointment allows your doctor to examine your skin and discuss your areas of concern. In addition, they will ask you about your desired results and may recommend a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals. If you are approved for treatment, you can begin preparing for your first treatment session.

Preparation

This treatment involves very little preparation. You may be given specific instructions by your doctor, which you should follow carefully to ensure that you see the best results possible. In general, we recommend that you avoid any new skincare products or treatments which may cause irritation in the days before your appointment.

Similarly, we recommend that you limit your sun exposure and avoid tanning. Irritated skin may make treatment less comfortable and can result in a longer recovery time.

Treatment

On the day of your appointment, you should avoid wearing any makeup or skincare products in the target areas. If needed, your doctor can apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort during treatment. However, the treatment process causes little to no discomfort for the majority of our patients. Once you are ready, your doctor will use the handheld device on the target areas.

As they move the device across the skin, the small, sterile needles create tiny holes and instantly triggers the body’s healing processes. You may feel a slight tickle or pressure, but the treatment process should not be uncomfortable. In total, an average appointment takes just 30-45 minutes. If you opted to include PRP or radiofrequency treatment, your appointment may take slightly longer.

Once your doctor is finished, you can expect to return to your normal activities with zero downtime. Due to the nature of this treatment, your face may be redder than normal for 1-3 days after treatment. Because of this, you may want to avoid scheduling it immediately before any important social events.

Recovery

For the first 24-48 hours, you may experience slight redness and warmth in your skin. This is a natural reaction to the micro-wounds created by the needles and is part of the healing process. The redness should fade over the first 1-3 days, and your skin should heal completely in 5-7 days. During this time, you should plan to avoid any exfoliating or irritating facial treatments. You should also limit your time in direct sunlight and wear sunscreen to protect your healing skin from sun damage.

Results

Your final results should appear 3-5 weeks after your microneedling appointment. This can include tighter, smoother skin, reduced pore size, minimized lines and wrinkles, and a brighter, clearer appearance. In addition, you may experience an improvement in your acne and some fading in scars or uneven skin tone.

The increased collagen and elastin levels should result in a fresh, healthy glow and an overall improvement in the appearance and lift of your skin as well. These results typically last 4-6 weeks once they fully appear. During this time, the added benefits of PRP or radiofrequency treatment will enhance and extend your results.

Once your results begin to fade, you have the option to return for follow-up treatments to maintain your ideal image. In addition, you can continue to improve the appearance of your skin and further treat common skin concerns with regular microneedling appointments and a personalized treatment plan.
